Voyage and history of early settlers of Eleuthera explored in new book

Author Gabrielle F. Culmer announces publication of ‘The Eleutherian Voyagers and Beyond’

NEW YORK – In 1648, a group of 70 settlers set sail for the island of Eleutheria. After harsh conditions and strict laws, only 35 settlers remained. Gabrielle F. Culmer’s new book, “The Eleutherian Voyagers and Beyond: A Genealogical Study of Early Eleutherans” (published by iUniverse), explores the history of the families that decided to settle on what is now a small Bahamian island in search of new opportunities.

Culmer spent years crafting previous historical knowledge and carefully compiling research to clarify myths and examine the lives and genealogy of the small group of early settlers to Eleuthera. Within the pages of “The Eleutherian Voyagers and Beyond” are photographs of the undeveloped landscape they would have encountered on their expedition as well as details of the lives of the people who journeyed to the unknown island. Culmer provides answers as to why the settlers may have left their homes in Europe, what challenges they faced and how they survived the journey and eventual conditions of the island. Later journeys followed and a witness account depicts the perseverance of early members of the community.

“The Eleutherian Voyagers and Beyond” was written to assist in the understanding of the unity of different elements of families and learning about ancestors. The book also asserts the existence of those who later settled from other remote territories where records were challenging. Culmer hopes readers take away “an appreciation of the builders of a modern society, their contribution, the concept of voyages of the travelers to Eleuthera and who they were.”

The Eleutherian Voyagers and Beyond

By Gabrielle F. Culmer

In 1648, seventy settlers landed on the remote, uninhabited island of Eleutheria, in what is now The Bahamas, with the dream of establishing a new settlement in the western hemisphere. Life was harsh, but those who remained laid the foundations of a community and culture that lives on today.

·         An objective exploration of the history of Eleuthera researched by an author with ties to the island who began by exploring her own genealogy.

·         A fascinating insight into settlements of the 17th century and what compelled European voyagers to travel to remote parts of the world in pursuit of a new life.

·         A great book for anyone interested in genealogy in the western hemisphere spanning to the Southern coast of America.

·         Gabrielle F. Culmer is available for interview.

In 1648, the island of Eleutheria seemed remote to the rest of the world. A brave captain decided to provide an expedition for those who wanted to leave the new settlement on Somers Isle for social and economic reasons. After a group of seventy settlers set sail for Eleuthera, they were forced to trade natural resources. The conditions were harsh and only thirty-five determined settlers remained. More settlers from the British Isles and around the world followed in the 18th and 19th centuries to contribute to the community.

Gabrielle F. Culmer relies on years of carefully compiled research to clarify myths and examine the lives and genealogy of the small group of early settlers to Eleuthera. Included are photographs of the undeveloped landscape they would have encountered on their expedition. As Culmer details the illustrious lives of the people who journeyed to the unknown island, she provides an intriguing glimpse into why they left their homes; the challenges they endured; and ultimately how they survived.

New novel sets sweeping love story on shores of Saint-Tropez

Mindy Croxie put up walls after her husband’s death. Can Blaine O’Neil and Saint-Tropez break them down?

NEW YORK – Celebrated author Gabrielle F. Culmer charms and enchants readers with her new novel that takes them from the busy streets of New York City to the pristine coastline of Saint Tropez in, “Arrive by Dusk” (published by Archway Publishing).

I wanted a novel where the characters have progressed to international professional status in the city unlike anything I have written,” Culmer shares. “I was also inspired by NY professional life and French cultural life, including their art, food and monuments.”

International landscape artist Mindy Croxie is desperate for a change of pace. Widowed at 34 and still grieving for her husband, Lamont, Mindy decides to participate in an art show along the Mediterranean Sea in Saint-Tropez. When she arrives, Mindy bumps into Blaine O’Neil, an old friend and flame who is opening a new luxury hotel near her art show.

Blaine has been wildly successful in his professional life, but his personal life is lacking. When he crosses paths with Mindy, Blaine sees this as an opportunity to pursue the life he once envisioned with Mindy. With Lamont and the life they should have lived still fresh in her mind, Mindy must decide if she is ready to let go of the past and embrace a new life and love.

Through her novel, Culmer hopes to instill an appreciation for the arts in readers. She says, “It is an attractive novel and after reading everyone will want some of Blaine’s ambition and Mindy’s stoicism in glamorous settings.”

Happy Father's Day!

Happy Father's Day!

“Father” 2nd edition. By Gabrielle F. Culmer from Blue Streams to Paradise and also published in the Nassau Tribune for Father's day 2013.

Dear Father, I know that you have cared

By showing the love which you have shared.

The guidance we have come to know,

Makes us all the persons you have raised.

Now we can say that we have experienced

Your way in life and tried for excellence,

To pattern along the ways you have taught

Aware that such talents cannot be bought.

So when your arms outreached do grow,

Further beyond what we have in store,

They guide us to where our lives should be,

This hand which guides so graciously.

For when in life we have reached our heights,

The ones which you have set in sight,

We will know that we have made it through,

That it is has been your work that has held through.
